Project Overview
On Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, Sam’s two-storey shed-style home pushes the familiar barn typology upward to approximately six metres, introducing a lofted mezzanine, cathedral ceilings, and curved hempcrete walls that shape the interior architecture. Designed by Arcolo Architects, the project places hempcrete at the centre of the structural and performance strategy, integrating fire resilience and thermal moderation directly into the wall assembly.

The Challenge
The home rises to approximately six metres, stretching the typical limits of a shed-style build. At this height, structural requirements, fire performance, and constructability become more demanding, particularly in coastal settings. The wall system needed to support vertical scale while maintaining architectural clarity and material integrity.

Our Approach
RespiraBlock hempcrete blocks formed the primary wall system, with their lighter weight supporting practical two-storey construction at approximately six metres in height. Wall installation progressed at an average of around thirty square metres per day, supported by fewer units per square metre, manageable lifting, and straightforward cutting methods that suited an owner-builder workflow.

The Outcome
The finished home reads nothing like a utility building. Volume, curvature, and exposed height shape an interior that feels deliberate and spatially composed. Hempcrete walls contribute thermal stability and acoustic calm while forming part of the finished surface, allowing performance to be visible. The project affirms that a shed-style home can carry architectural intent, environmental performance, and owner-builder delivery within a single material strategy.
