Meeniyan Community Hub
Completed in Gippsland, the Meeniyan Community Centre applied lessons from earlier commercial hempcrete projects, combining cast-in-place walls with the first commercial use of RespiraBlocks to deliver a more efficient civic build.

Project Overview
The Meeniyan Community Centre brought hempcrete back into a civic setting, this time within a small regional town where the building is used daily for meetings, events, and community gatherings. Building on the experience gained at Mildura, the project combined cast-in-place hempcrete with the first commercial use of RespiraBlocks, testing how hemp systems could be delivered more efficiently within a public construction programme.

The Challenge
The Community Centre needed to perform as a heavily used public building within a compact regional town centre. Boundary conditions, including a neighbouring building within close proximity, introduced fire considerations, while internal areas such as public toilets required durability against moisture, impact, and daily cleaning. At the same time, the hempcrete installation needed to integrate smoothly within a commercial build schedule without extending programme timelines.

Our Approach
The wall system combined cast-in-place hempcrete with the first commercial use of RespiraBlocks. Introducing blocks in place of full-height formwork significantly reduced installation time compared to earlier projects. The hybrid method simplified sequencing, improved trade coordination, and allowed hempcrete to be delivered more efficiently within a commercial construction programme.

The Outcome
The completed building demonstrates that hempcrete can be delivered in civic architecture without extending construction time or relying on large specialist crews. The project received significant recognition at the 2025 ArchiTeam Awards, including the ArchiTeam Medal and the Community & Public Award, confirming that hemp-based systems can meet the durability, performance, and scheduling expectations of everyday community buildings.
