Hemp block ACT studio 1

Hempcrete Backyard Yoga Studio

The slab was poured. The frame was up. No allowance for hempcrete. Lightweight blocks and a simple brick lintel detail made it work with ease.

Project Overview

This Canberra backyard build shows how hempcrete blocks can be introduced even when construction is already underway. Designed as a combined home office and yoga studio, the project demonstrates how high thermal performance can be achieved on a modest budget using simple, adaptable detailing.

The Challenge

The slab and timber frame were already complete when we first spoke to Tom Henderson. With no ledge or allowance for external blockwork, the existing foundation couldn’t directly support hempcrete blocks. The project needed a way to add performance without altering the structure or increasing cost.

Our Approach

After a couple of back and forths with Tom and his engineer, we were able to detail a brick lintel along the slab edge to support the external skin of hempcrete blocks. The lightweight nature of the blocks made this viable. 120mm RespiraBlocks being 20% of the weight of standard bricks, this did not introduce too much load to the brick lintel or the existing slab. RespiraBlocks were also installed internally to achieve an ultra high-performance wall system without complex construction changes.

The Outcome

The finished space performs well above expectations for its size and budget. The hempcrete envelope delivers steady indoor comfort through Canberra’s temperature swings, while demonstrating that block systems can be integrated even when the frame and slab are already in place.
